Willow Wood Hospice welcomes medical students on various placements, including Personal Excellence Portfolio (PEP) Placements, Electives, or other attachments.
A placement with the Hospice provides an opportunity to experience the multidisciplinary team approach to holistic patient – centred assessment of symptoms, and management option, including psychological and spiritual support, complementary therapies, as well as conventional methods of care.
The Hospice understands reflection is an important part of growth as a doctor, so students are encouraged to join decision making discussions, where clinical situations, with many possible treatment options, are considered. There will also be opportunities to meet patients staying in Inpatients, in our Outpatient clinics, and in the Day Hospice, as well as to meet the extended Palliative Care Team of Tameside and Glossop.
During the placement with the Hospice, students will engage in didactic lectures, experiential learning, small study groups, patient case reviews and literature and journal discussions. Most importantly, students will meet the patients and their families, who want to share their experience of living with a life-limiting illness with the next generation of doctors. As a result of the work with our team, many past students have presented posters at conferences and had publications in medical literature.
