Peter Wood Awarded an MBE
Hospice finance director Peter Wood was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours this summer.
Peter has dedicated the last 15 years to helping Willow Wood, lending his years of expertise as an accountant. He even dressed as a tree to run the Great Manchester 10K in May to boost Hospice funds!
He has been a member of Glossop Rotary Club since 1964 and founded the Glossop Jog, which has just celebrated its 30th birthday, and which has raised more than £150,000 for charity.
"It's a nice reflection on the Hospice and the Rotary Club, and the work they do - I am only one person." said Peter, who lives in Hyde with wife Mavis, and has three daughters and eight grandchildren.
"I can think of many people who are more deserving, but I have got it and I'm going to enjoy it!"
Peter, who was also a councillor in Hyde Werneth for four years, will be visiting Buckingham Palace in December to collect his award. |

Teacher Goes "Batty" for New Car
Shoppers went "batty" for the celebrity guest drawing of Willow Wood's car raffle in September.
Kathy Staff, Hospice patron - better known as wrinkly stocking-wearing Nora Batty in BBC's Last of the Summer Wine - pulled out the winning ticket
in front of a crowd of hopefuls on Ashton Market Ground.
Mary Gilmore, a teacher from Stalybridge, struck lucky and picked up the Suzuki Swift.
John Fellowes, Hospice Appeals Manager, thanked Ashton's Ladysmith Shopping Centre, and Colin Appleyard Cars for donating the brand new motor.
"I was delighted that we sold in excess of 61,000 tickets - this was tremendous in view of the terrible weather we had throughout this year which affected local shows" said John. |

Bowling For Willow Wood
The 2007 Willow Wood Mixed Pairs Bowls tournament was once again a well supported (if wet) event. 51 pairs took part in this annual event at Stamford Park, Ashton, none of whom were likely to let a bit of the damp stuff put them off!
The competition was won by Julie & David Walker (the only pair to win the trophy for a second time!) beating Barbara Moxon & John Hanson in a well fought final.
Thanks must go to Ashton under Lyne Motors who sponsored the prize money, The Motor Clinic who sponsored the café and Premier Bowls who donated a set of woods to be raffled on the day.
Special thanks must also go to the ladies of Stamford Park Bowling Club who organised the "eats" and kept us going with tea during a very long day. Almost £800 was raised on the day for Willow Wood. |

Hospice Choir Goes From Strength to Strength
One of the highlights during Christmas at Willow Wood is the Day Hospice Party. It is always a fun-filled event where you can expect lots of laughs - on one occasion some of the nurses dressed up as the Spice Girls!
Carried away by earlier successes, Christmas 2004 saw a performance of The Sound of Music. While those involved will freely admit it was not the musical show of the year, it did cause a lot of laughs, and resulted in the formation of the "Willow Wood Singers".
The Singers have been an outstanding success, and the earlier, more riotous days have now given way to a choir which take its role very seriously. Rehearsals are held fortnightly by the enthusiastic and accomplished choir mistress Joyce Hansell.
From day one, a target was set to perform at the "Voices for Hospices" Concert in October 2005, and this was received with acclaim, and some surprise, by an audience of hundreds of people.
Since then, a number of performances have been staged at various events - including a wedding!
The choir members are drawn from most sectors of Willow Wood's organisation. |
