20 Years of Care

Willow Wood has been at the forefront of Hospice care for twenty years, and we are looking ahead to the next 20. Find out more about our community, our care and our plans for the future.

Willow Wood has been providing the very highest standards of care to our community since 1999, and we are thrilled to celebrate our 20th anniversary with the people of Tameside and Glossop.

Our community has always been so very important to us; indeed, it is true to say we wouldn’t be here without their dedication and commitment. From the very first meeting to discuss fundraising on 28 April 1993, a dedicated team of volunteers, including Martin Willescroft, now president of our board of trustees, and Pat Walklate who still volunteers as a receptionist, came together to raise the £2million needed to build Willow Wood.

Of course, there were many other staunch supporters who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, notably the late Peter Wood (who became our volunteer finance director and indefatigable fundraiser), the late Sydney Rogerson, and Don Newton, chairman of the appeal and who later became our first chairman. All were very proud to be present on 3 April 1998 when the keystone was laid.

Building continued, and the first staff moved into Willow Wood in February 1999. Our first day patient was admitted on 5 May and the first inpatient followed in September: Willow Wood was well and truly open.

Back then the first year’s running costs were around £750,000, a far cry from the £2.5million plus it costs us today. However, the continued support of our community ensures not only that we are able to care for our patients and their families, but to develop our services, maintaining our position at the very pinnacle of Hospice care.

At Willow Wood the emphasis is on living life to the fullest, and our Day Services team offer a wide range of therapies, clinics and groups to ensure as many of our community as possible can access our care. Symptom management, physiotherapy, complementary therapies, spa days and carers support and just part of the treatments designed to enhance wellbeing and improve physical function.

Our inpatient ward offers love, dignity and support for our end-of-life patients and their families, while our family support team offer counselling and spiritual support.

We couldn’t do any of this without our community who support us in so many ways.

Our sincere and grateful thanks, whether you are one of our team of around 600 volunteers, whether you’re a member of our lottery or buy from one of our shops, whether you fundraise for us or sponsor someone who does, you help us continue our care. Thank you.
