Latest The Collection - Inspired by Love Island!
Fans of Love Island will know that this year the contestants are wearing pre-loved clothing, instead of the usual mix of fast fashion and designer wear. Possibly surprisingly, this throws up a connection with Willow Wood, as their eight shops and online sales have a plethora of high quality clothing suitable for all ages and tastes.
Retail operations manager Sharon Hodgkiess said, “We’re putting together a special collection of beach, summer and party wear all inspired by Love Island outfits. And I can tell you our shop managers are having great fun choosing the outfits and putting up displays in our shops. A number of them are real fans of the show, and are on the alert for any clothes that mirror the outfits worn on TV.
“There’s plenty to choose from; we’ve got everything from bikinis and sarongs to sparkly clubbing outfits and everything in between, whether for day or night time.”
Of course, there is a serious message behind the fun too. Fast fashion is one of the biggest polluters and users of resources there is. As Sharon said, “It can take up to 200 tons of fresh water to dye and finish just one ton of fabric, and when you realise that almost half of the world’s population are at risk of water shortages, that statistic really makes you stop and think that there must be a better way.
“And it’s not just water shortages. According to reseach by TRAID, the clothes waste charity, the average garment is only worn 10 times before being thrown away. So recycling clothes rather than putting them in landfill makes sense.”
The recycling message does seem to be getting through to the younger generation. Those aged between 18-34 have the highest average percentage of pre-loved clothing in their wardrobes. That’s good for the planet, good for the wallet and good for Willow Wood, as the clothes sold in their shops bring in a high proportion of the nearly £3million it will take this year to maintain and develop services for the people of Tameside and Glossop.
Sharon said, “The next time you’re in the market for a new (to you) outfit, please check out our shops. And if Love Island isn’t your thing, we have plenty of good quality outfits for all ages and sizes. Just look on our website, www.willowwood.info for details of our shops and to check out our eBay site. “
