Latest Our Day Hospice Is Opening Up Again!

After a full year of supporting day patients with phone and Zoom calls, staff at Willow Wood are so happy to start welcoming patients and their carers back to the Hospice once more. In addition day hospice staff are now able to visit, assess and, where appropriate, support patients in their homes.

Rebecca Stimson, head of day services explains: “We’re starting off slowly by inviting small numbers to different groups, but it’s already making a difference to their lives. After shielding for a year people are finding it an absolute joy to return and of course, carers are benefiting as much as our patients”.

Carer Betty Topham agrees: “I used to take part in the arts & crafts group and loved it. Now, I’ve joined the START Activities Group and it felt so good to join Rebecca for a walk in the park knowing that my husband Jack was being well looked after back at Willow Wood. We’re doing some gardening as well. I’ve planted sunflowers at home and this week we spent some time planting up pots for the Hospice garden before a cuppa and a chat. They’re so good here, and can help if I’ve any worries or need any information.”

Further groups are continuing including our very popular men’s and women’s group and a Reiki empowerment group, some on Zoom and as complementary therapies are able to resume. In the meantime though as Betty said “It’s a lifeline, I can’t tell you how much we’ve enjoyed coming here over the last couple of weeks.”

During the pandemic there has been the time to reassess and restructure services to provide the best possible treatment packages for patients. Rebecca said, “Our aim is to rehabilitate our patients to be able to live their best possible lives and to support them with our holistic care. One of our great successes in the last few years has been our O2 Café for patients with lung and respiratory conditions. We’re now working towards offering a 12 week structured programme to help them achieve their personal goals, incorporating a social element as well as education and exercise.

“Another aim is to link in with Live Active Tameside with taster exercise sessions and we are working with the McMillan Unit to ensure we offer integrated care.”
