Willow Wood is very deeply saddened by the passing of one of the founder members of the Hospice.

Willow Wood is deeply saddened by the death of founder member and trustee Peter Wood, MBE.Peter embodied the spirit and the ideals of the Hospice movement, and we are all deeply saddened by his passing.

Peter was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, and it is largely due to his vision and his hard work that Willow Wood exists at all.As a member of Hyde Rotary Club back in the 1980’s, Peter was one of the first to back the idea of a Hospice for our area, and he was at the forefront of the campaign to raise funds and build Willow Wood.

He became a Trustee of Willow Wood in 1992, a position which he retained until the end; indeed, he was still working five days a week as the Finance Director at the beginning of October. Peter was a volunteer in this role, and no-one could have demonstrated more commitment and dedication. Karen Houlston, chief executive of Willow Wood said “Peter was a true friend, he was our rock.As one of the founders of Willow Wood we thank him for providing us with such a loving, warm and caring place, it was fitting he should be with us in his last days, benefitting from the care he so passionately believed. My sincere condolences go to his family.”

Peter believed in leading from the front, and would never ask anyone to doanything he wouldn't do himself. This followed through into his fundraising. He completed four marathons for Willow Wood, a parachute jump and took part in our first firewalk. He even took part in a fun run dressed as a Willow tree!

His charity work was recognized back in 2007 when he was awarded a very well deserved MBE.Peter was also given the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch when it passed through Tameside.

Peter had a long and illustrious career in industry, following service in the RAF.He was appointed Company Secretary and Finance Director at local company Chloride Ferrostatics back in 1963 and became Managing Director in 1971, staying with the company until his retirement. He then joined the Rotary Club and the rest is history!

A loving family man, nothing gave Peter more pleasure than to spend time with his wife Mavis, his three lovely daughters, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pat McCloskey, Chairman of Willow Wood said “Willow Wood would not have existed today if it had not been for his vision, dedication and loyalty. Peter has left us all a fantastic legacy and it is now our responsibility to protect that legacy and enhance it where we can.On behalf of everyone associated with Willow Wood past and present I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Mavis and all the Wood family.Peter is gone, but will never be forgotten.”

It’s often said when we lose someone that we will not see their like again, but it is certainly true of Peter Wood, MBE.We will all miss you, more than words can say.
