Phil Cowper, Trustee
I'm a local guy born and bred in Stalybridge and I currently still live in the town.
I became a Trustee at the Hospice 12 years ago with an aspiration to put something back into the local community after having had two very different but very enjoyable full time careers. For many years, commencing with a mechanical engineering apprenticeship, I worked in the manufacturing industry ending up as Managing Director responsible for two plastics manufacturing plants which were part of a large successful multi- national organisation. I then had the opportunity to take early retirement. It looked inviting but just at that moment in time it wasn't for me.
Changing direction and focus I went to work in the Public Sector establishing and leading a successful and nationally acclaimed Enterprise Development Initiative for Tameside MBC. This involved supporting, developing, growing and mentoring small to medium sized local businesses across Tameside and encouraging and fostering entrepreneurial activity. I loved every minute of this role and got to build up a lot of useful local contacts.
As a Trustee of Willow Wood I contribute by sharing my experience and business acumen to help the CEO, Management Team and the Board to deliver on our collective strategic aims and objectives. A serial networker I constantly promote the Hospice to everyone I meet.
My leisure time these days is busy and centres in the main around holidaying, dining out, socialising, going to concerts, walking and most importantly keeping in touch with friends.
